Internet of Things(IoT) and Smart Home Technology

The Internet of things  is the inter-networking of physical devices, smart devices, buildings, and other items—embedded with electronics, software, sensors, and network connectivity that enable these objects to communicate through each other.

Everybody is talking  about the forthcoming revolution of Internet of Things(IoT) and resulting interconnections of smart home technology for years. So what’s the big deal? As now, we all living in smart, connected homes. Part of the problem is too much competition, with not enough collaboration—there are tons of individual appliances and apps on the market, but few solutions to tie everything together into a single, seamless user experience. Now that big giant companies  like Google, Amazon and Apple are already well-versed in uniform user experiences  getting involved, I expect we’ll see some major advancements on these coming front  year.

With all the world’s knowledge in our pockets, we are living in a world that is already smart. But the dream of a true smart home remains unfulfilled, partly due to the high level of fragmentation in the industry, leading to countless offerings that don’t work together.
Intel is doing something different based on proactive research into ways to increase smart home adoption. The multi-tenant  smart home platform reference design is open, flexible, scalable, secure, and one on which any company or service provider can offer solutions, regardless of the industry to which it belongs.
Intel has the product breadth and ecosystem scale needed to uniquely deliver cost-optimized, horizontal infrastructure that also features security, device management, and analytics to support highly sophisticated use models. Intel is focusing on key areas:

  • Compute: Scalability and flexibility at the right price point based on Intel® Quark™ SoC, Intel® Atom™ processor, and Intel® Core™ processors
  • Context awareness: Truly smart experiences enabled by Intel® technologies
  • Connectivity: Support for PAN, LAN, WAN, and device on-boarding across multiple standards
The aim of the Internet of Things Value Creation Network is to:

Coordinate and help to increase and optimise the utilisation of results and value creation in the area of IoT.

Identify research opportunities in IoT technology, applications and services.

Form a research and development community with cross disciplinary collaboration, including business, communication, nanoelectronics, microsystems, information systems, and software, with a focus on challenges in IoT issues.

Assist emerging ideas in the field of IoT to find support for research in IoT from the appropriate funding agencies at national and European level. This involves linking to international researchers, industrial funding, and global industrial players.
